What Signs Do You Need to Open a Cafe? A Fit-Out Checklist

Charming new Adelaide cafe exterior on opening morning showing the full sign set -- Gigantic Signs fascia sign above the window, frosted window graphic band, footpath A-frame and a menu board glimpsed through the open door - gigantic signs adelaide

Opening a cafe in Adelaide? The short answer: most new cafes need a fascia or front sign, window graphics, a footpath A-frame, a menu board, and an opening-hours decal on the door. Gigantic Signs fits out cafes across Adelaide from our Kent Town workshop. Here is the full checklist.

We've been making signs for Adelaide businesses for over 30 years, and a cafe fit-out is one of the jobs we see most. The list below is the same one we run through with an owner over the counter -- what goes outside, what goes inside, and the order to buy it in so nothing holds up your opening. Everything is designed, printed and finished at our Kent Town facility, so it all matches and it all stands up to an Adelaide summer.

The outside: fascia, window and footpath

Your street-facing signs are what turn a passer-by into a first coffee. These four cover almost every new cafe:

  • Fascia or front sign -- the main sign above your door or across the shopfront. It carries your name and is the biggest single driver of walk-in recognition. This is usually the longest-lead item, often 2 to 3 weeks once artwork and any approval are sorted, so it goes on the list first. See our building and shopfront signage range.
  • Window graphics -- cut vinyl or printed film on the glass for your logo, opening hours, "now open", or a coffee-brand sticker. Cheap, high-impact, and easy to update each season.
  • Footpath A-frame -- the portable sign at the kerb that catches people walking past, usually printed at around 600x900mm so it reads from across the street. Swap the printed insert for daily specials, brunch times or a quiet-day "open" message. It's the cheapest, hardest-working sign a cafe can own -- more detail in our guide to A-frame signs in Adelaide.
  • Opening-hours decal -- a small cut-vinyl decal on the entry door. Low cost, and it stops the "are you open?" question at the glass. Group it with your window graphics in one order.

The A-frame is the one most owners want to price first, because it's the fastest to have made and the first sign working for you on opening day. You can price a metal footpath frame instantly here:

The inside: menus, walls and counters

Once people are through the door, your interior signs do the selling and set the mood. The core inside list for a cafe:

  • Menu boards -- printed or acrylic menu panels above the counter, often around 600x900mm or larger, or a framed board on the wall. This is the sign your customers read longest, so legibility and matching your brand colours matter most here.
  • Wall graphics or a painted logo feature -- a branded feature wall for the photos people take and share. It can be printed vinyl, cut lettering, or your logo rendered large as a hero piece behind the counter.
  • Counter and point-of-sale signage -- small signs for the till, specials, loyalty cards, "order here", and card-only notices. Little items, but they keep the counter running smoothly.
  • Reception or entry sign -- if you have a waiting or ordering point, a clean branded panel there ties the space together. See our reception signage options.

Interior branding isn't only a cafe thing, and it's worth seeing the range before you settle on menu boards alone. A dentist we worked with wanted her practice logo painted large across the main wall as the first thing patients see -- a single feature piece that did more for the space than a shelf of small signs. A local wellness studio came to us for a small illuminated lightbox at the entry plus a set of printed acrylic panels through the treatment rooms. Same idea for your cafe: a couple of well-placed interior pieces usually beat a scatter of little ones.

What order should you buy in?

Getting the sequence right stops a sign holding up your opening. The order we'd suggest for most Adelaide cafes:

  • 1. Front fascia sign -- longest lead time and the one most likely to need approval, so start it the moment you have your fit-out dates and branding locked in.
  • 2. Window graphics and the door decal -- quick to make and easy to install just before you open. A "coming soon" window graphic during fit-out also builds interest early.
  • 3. Footpath A-frame -- have it ready for opening day so you're pulling foot traffic from the first morning.
  • 4. Menu boards and interior pieces -- these can follow once your fit-out and final menu are settled, and they're the easiest to add or change later.

Ordering everything in one hit through the same maker is the simplest way to keep colours, fonts and materials consistent across the lot -- inside and out.

What about council approval?

Some cafe signs can need council approval before they go up, particularly a fixed fascia sign or a footpath A-frame that sits on a public path. The rules vary by council and by sign type, so it's worth checking before you lock in a design. We walk through what usually needs approval in our guide on whether you need council approval for a sign in SA -- read that alongside this checklist, and confirm the specifics with your own council.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first sign I should order for a new cafe?

The front fascia sign. It has the longest lead time and is the one most likely to need approval, so starting it early stops it holding up your opening. Window graphics, the door decal and the A-frame can all be made quickly closer to the day.

Do I really need a printed menu board?

A chalkboard works for daily specials, but a printed or acrylic menu board is easier to read, holds your brand colours, and doesn't smudge. Most cafes run both -- a fixed printed board for the core menu and a small chalkboard for specials.

Can you match my branding across every sign?

Yes -- that's the advantage of ordering the full set from one maker. We build the outside and inside signs to the same colours, fonts and finish so your fascia, windows, menu boards and footpath sign all read as one cafe.
