PVC vs mesh banners: which do you need?

The single biggest choice is the material, and it comes down to one thing: wind. A solid banner is a sail. The more exposed the spot, the more you want the wind to pass through the banner instead of pushing against it.

• Solid PVC banner -- a full, non-perforated vinyl sheet. Colours are the boldest and the print is the crispest, which makes it the pick for indoor use, backdrops, shopfronts and any sheltered spot. On an exposed outdoor run it catches the full force of the wind, so it needs to be pulled up tight and well anchored.
• Mesh banner -- the same print on a perforated fabric full of tiny holes, so roughly a third of the air passes straight through. That takes the load off the banner and its fixings, which is why mesh is the right call for temporary fencing, scaffold shrouds, building wraps and any open, windy site. The trade-off is a slightly softer look up close, but from a distance you'd struggle to tell them apart.

Rule of thumb: if it's going up on a fence, a scaffold or an exposed frame, choose mesh. If it's indoors, on a wall or on a sheltered shopfront, solid PVC gives you the punchiest result. Not sure? Sizes, hems and eyelets

Banners are made to your measurements, so there's no fixed "standard" size, but a few dimensions come up again and again. A common shopfront or fence banner runs around 3000 x 1000mm, market and event backdrops often sit near 2000 x 1000mm, and long construction-fence runs are printed in panels and joined on site. • Rope pockets or D-rings -- optional alternatives to eyelets for backdrops and hanging displays where you want a cleaner edge.
