LED Sign Maintenance & Driver Replacement Adelaide

Who services illuminated signs in Adelaide, and why can no one find the driver? Gigantic Signs services and repairs illuminated signage from our Kent Town workshop. The driver is the small power supply that fails first, and if a previous installer buried it inside the sign, reaching it becomes the whole job -- which is exactly why we design ours to be found.

We've been building and repairing signs for Adelaide businesses for over 30 years, and we design all of our illuminated signs for maintenance from the start. The cost of an illuminated sign isn't just in the sign -- it's in the maintenance, and where the electrics live decides whether a future repair is a ladder job or a rebuild. Everything is fabricated and wired at our Kent Town workshop, so we know how these signs are put together and, just as importantly, how they come apart when something fails. For the full range, see our illuminated signs page.
What is a sign driver and why does it fail first?
A driver is the small power supply that converts mains power down to the low voltage your LEDs run on. It is the hardest-working component in an illuminated sign and, in our experience, the first thing to fail. The LEDs themselves are usually rated to last far longer than the driver in front of them, so when a sign or a section of it goes dark, the driver is the prime suspect -- not the lights.
That matters for how you design and service a sign. A few practical points we work to:
- Drivers wear, LEDs endure -- plan on replacing a driver or two over the life of the sign well before you replace the LEDs. Design so that swap is quick.
- Check power first -- before anyone books a repair, test that power is actually reaching the sign at the circuit breaker. A tripped breaker looks exactly like a failed driver from the footpath.
- Quote the wattage -- when you do call, having the failed driver's wattage means a like-for-like replacement can be sourced before anyone climbs a ladder.
If your sign is on but patchy rather than fully dark, the cause can differ. We cover that in why is my illuminated sign dim or uneven, and how long the whole system should last in how long do illuminated signs last.
Why did the old installer hide the drivers?
Sometimes it's carelessness. Often it's deliberate. Some sign companies bury the drivers high inside the sign box where nobody but them can reach them, and they don't hand over any record of where the electrics sit. The reasoning we've heard, more or less openly, is "that's our knowledge, it's our sign" -- the drivers are hidden so that when one fails you have to come back to the original maker, on their terms, or replace the whole unit.
It's the same lock-in behaviour we see when an installer won't release the design files: it keeps the client trapped rather than served. The practical result is ugly. A driver that might cost very little to swap turns into a scissor-lift visit, a part hunt, and in the worst case a recommendation to "just buy a new sign" because reaching the failed component means dismantling the face. You paid for a sign; you did not agree to a maintenance trap.
What does design-for-maintenance look like?
Design-for-maintenance means deciding, before the sign is built, that someone will one day need to reach the electrics without pulling the sign apart. On a large illuminated banner we'll typically run the wiring through the cladding to a set of drivers and general power outlets mounted on a C-channel along the roof, so a failed section can be swapped from a ladder rather than a full dismantle. The principles we hold to:
- Accessible electrics -- drivers and power outlets sit where a technician can actually get to them, on a roof channel or behind a serviceable panel, not sealed inside the face.
- Sectioned circuits -- a big sign is wired in sections, so a single failed driver darkens one part, not the whole run, and only that part needs attention.
- Documented driver locations -- we record where every driver and outlet sits and give that to the client, so any competent sign electrician can service it later. Your sign should never be hostage to one company's memory.
- Like-for-like swaps -- standard driver wattages mean replacements are easy to source, so a repair is measured in a short visit, not a rebuild.
A dark banner nobody could service
A self-storage operator came to us after roughly a third of a 13-metre illuminated banner had gone dark. The original installer had left no records of where the drivers were, so the first job wasn't even the repair -- it was finding the electrics. That meant a scissor lift to hunt for a two-year-old driver tucked away behind a ten-year-old banner face, in a spot chosen to be hidden rather than serviceable. What should have been a straightforward driver swap became a search-and-recover exercise, all because the electrics were buried and undocumented on day one.
The contrast is the whole point. Wire that same banner with drivers and outlets on an accessible roof channel, keep a record of where they are, and the failed third is a quick swap from a ladder. Same sign, wildly different repair -- decided years earlier by whoever designed it.
Frequently asked questions
Who services illuminated signs in Adelaide?
Gigantic Signs services and repairs illuminated signage from our Kent Town workshop. We can work on signs we didn't build, though a sign with undocumented, buried drivers takes longer to diagnose because the electrics have to be located first.
Why has part of my LED sign gone dark?
Usually a failed driver in that section. LEDs are rated to last far longer than drivers, so when one part goes out the driver is the likely cause. Check power at the breaker first, then call us with the driver wattage if you have it.
Do you record where the drivers are?
Yes. We document driver and power-outlet locations and hand that to the client, so future maintenance is a quick, planned job for any competent sign electrician -- not a search. Your sign shouldn't be locked to one supplier.
Got a dark or ageing illuminated sign?
Whether you need a driver replaced, a section brought back to life, or a new illuminated sign designed so it can actually be serviced, we can help. Call our Kent Town team on (08) 8362 5455 or get in touch to book a look at your sign. Planning a new one?
