What drives the cost of a pylon sign?

A pylon is a structure first and a sign second. It stands metres in the air on its own footing, so most of the cost lives in the engineering, not the graphics. The levers that move the price:

• Height and wind engineering -- the taller the sign, the more wind load it has to survive, and the heavier the steel and footing underneath it get. A 6-metre roadside pylon and a 10-metre highway pylon are different structures, not the same sign scaled up.
• Footings and foundations -- a pylon is held up by an engineered concrete footing sized to the sign and the ground it sits in. Poor soil, a sloped site or a tight setback all change the footing, and it's a big part of the build.
• Illumination -- an illuminated pylon carries faces, LEDs and drivers. More faces and larger faces mean more lighting hardware, and the LEDs and driver are the parts that wear, so quality here shapes both price and running life.
• Number of faces and tenants -- a single-business pylon is simpler than a multi-tenant directory with a stack of changeable panels. More panels, more fabrication.
• Council approval -- a pylon almost always needs planning approval, and that process carries its own time and cost before any steel is cut (more below).
• Installation -- getting a multi-metre structure into the ground usually means a crane, sometimes traffic management on a busy road, and a crew for the day. Site access drives this more than people expect.
• Removing an old pylon -- if there's an existing sign to come out first, that's a separate job with its own crane, disposal and make-good on the ground.

This is why a "cost per square foot" figure or a national average tells you almost nothing. Two pylons the same size can price very differently once height, footing, illumination and site access are counted.

Fabrication vs installation: where the money goes

It helps to split a pylon into two costs, building it and installing it, because they're separate jobs with separate risks.

• Fabrication is the workshop time. A large illuminated sign is roughly a week of work at our Kent Town facility -- cutting and welding the frame, fitting the faces, wiring the LEDs and drivers, and finishing it so it holds up in the Adelaide sun and wind.
• Installation is often a single day, but a demanding one: a crane to lift the structure onto its footing, a crew, and traffic control if it's near a road. When a sign can be pre-mounted in the workshop and craned up in one lift, install is quick. When it has to be assembled on site, that can turn one lift into two and stretch the day.

The illuminated hardware matters long after install, too. On a big sign the LEDs can run for well over a decade, but the driver that powers them has a much shorter life, and a failed driver can take a whole section dark. In almost every case a pylon needs planning approval before it goes up, and that approval is a real line in your budget and timeline, not an afterthought.
